beach walk thumb Beach Walking Is So Relaxing

I know I’ve been overdoing the sunset stuff, but it is the golden hour and the colours in this shot have always made stop and look again.  This was taken once again on Nobby’s Beach, which was the setting for Thursday’s image.  Here we’re facing in the same direction but it’s slightly later and I’ve pulled in for a tighter crop.  I also ran this through my current favourite add-on – Topaz Adjust – using one of their HDR presets and tweaking it slightly to draw out a little more contrast detail.

This is the last in my Australia series, tomorrow we start on a new theme.

dingo 1 This Dingo Didn’t Take Any Babies
These guys have gotten some bad press over the years but I think Dingoes are very regal looking.  I spotted this guy just taking it easy on his sunny log and watching the world go by and thought he looked like animal royalty on a throne.

This shot was taken at the same wildlife reserve as yesterday’s post.

koala Koalas love to snooze

I think it’s got something to do with being almost permanently drunk on gum leaves.  Snapped this cute little fella at a wildlife reserve in the Hunter Valley, just thought he was too gorgeous to pass up.

nobbysunset Sunset at Nobby’s BeachYes, it’s another sunset.  I told you yesterday that I love sunsets.  This one was shot at Nobby’s Beach in Newcastle, NSW – which is one of my favourite beaches in the world.  The beach name may be known to some of you because of the enormous ship that washed up on it during a huge storm a couple of years ago.

I actually took this shot several years ago with one of my first digital cameras, a Sony Cybershot, so it was a smallish JPG to start with and therefore a bit trickier to manipulate later in Photoshop.

Most of the work I did was to counteract the effects of the strong sun shining into the camera, which affected the colour and the exposure.  It’s not a perfect shot by any means, but it’s an old favourite of mine.

sbeachsunset South Beach SunsetI love sunset shots, the colours are amazing and you get so much scope to work with shadows and light.  This shot was taken on the mid-north coast of NSW, not far from the holiday town of Laurieton.  You can see smoke from a bushfire on the horizon, which has tinged the clouds a smoky orange.

This was a 3-shot HDR at +/- 2 stops.  I first ran it through Photomatix and then tweaked in LR2, adding clarity, vibrance and sharpening.

melbatnight 2 Melbourne by nightThis image was captured from the Docklands area of Melbourne, hand-held against the balcony rail of an apartment we were staying in.  There hasn’t been much post-processing done, just a little saturation and contrast adjustment and a moderate amount of sharpening.  I took around 6 shots and this was the only one that came out, just wish I’d had a tripod with me on that trip.

Melbourne is one of my favourite cities in Australia.  I find it much more laid back and low-key than Sydney, and in some sense a little continental with their cafe culture and relaxed dining.  I also love the trams!  Most Australian cities had them in days of old, and then replaced them with buses, much to their loss.
