bos church The Church in the dell

Another HDR image from my recent trip to Boscastle in Cornwall. This is the Minster Church just outside the village and it has to be one of the most beautiful settings for a church I’ve ever seen.

There has apparently been a religious foundation on the site since 500AD, believed to have been established by a Welsh princess now known as St Merthiana. The current buildings date from the mid 19th century after the original Norman church from 1150 and later repairs in 1507 had fallen into bad disrepair.

boscountry2 Boscastle Countryside

My wife and I had a lovely break in the village of Boscastle in Cornwall before Xmas and this is a HDR image of some nearby countryside showing traces of just how cold December was in the UK.

This image was processed in Photomatix Pro v4 and LR3 was used to tidy up noise and add a little extra clarity.

holygrail Wonder if the Holy Grail’s in there?

Small homage to the Monty Python team.  This isn’t the castle from the movie, it’s Bodiam Castle in Kent, but I could just imagine seeing a cow come flying over the battlements when I look at this image.

doorknocker1 Cathedral Door Knocker

Taken at Durham Cathedral on a recent trip to the north of England.  I thought the textures of the old metal and wooden door looked fantastic.  Adjusted in Lightroom3 and tweaked in Topaz Adjust to bring out the detail and add extra contrast.

hardrian cliffs High Shields Crag and Crag Lough in Northumberland

This image was taken during a trip around Hadrian’s Wall in the UK.  The rock formations and their colour really jumped out at me and I thought with the gloomy sky they’d convey some sense of just how bleak and lonely it must have been for the soldiers manning the wall.

Processed using Lightroom and Topaz Adjust.

cumbriasunset Cumbria Sunset

There’s no getting away from it, sunset is the golden hour as far as I’m concerned.  This is a view from a farmhouse B&B we stayed in while touring around Hadrian’s Wall.  Processed entirely in LR3 with very simple white balance, toning and saturation settings.

hadrianwall Hadrian’s Wall

Although it can be rather hard to find the actual remaining part of the wall, every now and then you come across a place that just evokes thoughts of ancient days.  The weather on this day was perfect for the kind of image I was looking for and made me try to imagine just what it was like for the poor Roman soldiers manning this part of the empire’s battlements.

The image was processed entirely in LR2, adjusting the contrast and colours for a more dramatic effect.  Finally I applied some edge darkening and vignetting to finish off.

mudmaid Cornwall – The Mud Maid (Lost Gardens of Heligan)

I thought this was an amazing piece of natural sculpture made from rocks and plants by some local artists.  I didn’t have to do too much with this image, just some simple cropping and exposure adjustments in Lightroom and then some pop using Topaz Adjust.
